Tips for an Amazing Summer

Dog in front of fan

The first step of enjoying the summer of 2021 is making sure you stay cool all season long. It's hard to enjoy the best season of the year if you spend it sweating both inside and outside. We've got some great tips that will get you and your home in the summer mood!

Adjust Your Thermostat

As the temperatures begin to soar, it's tempting to want to crank that thermostat down, even if it means you'll be putting a sweatshirt on later. It's only natural. You step in from the sweltering heat and seek immediate relief, but this is not the method we would recommend, and neither would the Department of Energy.

In fact, according to the Department of Energy, they recommend setting your thermostat to 78 degrees Fahrenheit when you're at home. This temperature will keep your home cooler than the outdoors without sending your energy bills through the roof or putting too much strain on your air conditioning system.

Out of the Box Ways to Stay Cool

Throw a Pool Party

Do you have your own pool or maybe a neighborhood pool you can use? A hot summer day is the best time to take advantage of that cool water. You can host some friends and family to help everyone seek shelter from the sweltering heat.

If you don't have a pool, buy a slip and slide or a tarp and pull out the hose, and have a fun day with that!

Make Ice Cream

A really fun way to keep cool this summer and satisfy your sweet tooth is by making homemade ice cream. Have you never made ice cream from scratch before? No worries! It's a simple process. Here's our four-ingredient recipe:

  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 2 cups half-and-half cream
  • 1 cup sugar
  • Two teaspoons vanilla extract

If you don't have an ice cream maker, don't worry; here's how to mix these ingredients by hand:

To make your summer ice cream without an ice cream maker:

  1. Pour the ingredient mixture into a shallow glass or metal container that you've pre-chilled.
  2. Place the filled container in the coldest part of your freezer until almost firm but still soft enough to be stirred.
  3. Check on the ice cream and stir it every 30 minutes for the next three hours. This will keep the ice cream creamy!

Don't feel like dealing with the hassle of making your own ice cream? That's totally fine! Try making an ice cream sundae bar instead! Layout a few different ice cream flavors on a table with a bunch of toppings for your family and friends to choose from.
