How Do Ductless Air Conditioners Work?
Unlike standard air conditioning systems, which use ducts to push and pull air to a central indoor unit and distribute cool air to each room through vents, ductless air conditioning systems heat or cool only the area they are located in.
As you may have guessed, ductless mini-split systems do not have ducts, so many people install them in homes that do not have ductwork. All you need for a ductless air conditioning system is a wall-mounted indoor unit, a hole in the wall for the wiring and refrigerant line, and some space outside for the outdoor unit. The indoor unit sucks air inside, sends it outside via the refrigerant line to be cooled in the evaporator unit, and returns cool air to the room.
Many people like mini-split systems because they can also be combined with a heat pump during the winter, bringing warm air into a cold room.
Our team at Homer Nine & Sons keeps you cool and cozy 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and all year round!
Climate Control by Zone
With ductless air conditioning, you can save money because you can keep different areas of your home at different temperatures. You might divide your house into “zones” and assign a different temperature to each zone, or you can simply turn your indoor air conditioning unit off when you’re not using a particular zone. For example, you might have your bedroom and bathroom (zone 1) set to 70 degrees while you sleep, and keep your kitchen, family room, and dining room (zone 2) at 76 degrees.
If you’re spending a lot of time in the family room, you may choose to turn off the unit in zone 1 to conserve energy. Mini-split systems also allow each family member to control the temperature of their own space. Even if your son likes it cold in his room, and your daughter prefers it a little warmer in hers, everyone wins with ductless air conditioning!
Choosing the Right Mini-Split System
When choosing your ductless air conditioning system, you need to consider the size of each room or zone. Then, you’ll want to choose the correct BTU capacity for each room. Mini splits range from 12,000 to 24,000 BTU, and the bigger the zone, the higher you want the BTU capacity to be.
If your mini split is too small, it will overwork itself and won’t properly cool the room, and if your mini split is too big it will turn on and off frequently to keep your room at the desired temperature.
You can also choose mini-split systems that cover multiple zones, as each indoor unit can be attached to one larger outdoor unit. Homer Nine & Sons will help you install your ductless air conditioning system in the best orientation for your home.
