Signs You Need a New Heater

Man performing maintenance

No one wants to be left out in the cold this fall and winter. Your heater is what keeps your house comfortable when the weather is chilly outside, so ensuring it is ready to work is essential.

Besides not heating your home efficiently or evenly, there are many other signs that can tell you when you need a new heater.

Age

Do you know how old your heater or furnace is? If it is more than 15 years old, it may be time for a replacement.

Although there are ways to lengthen your heater's lifespan, by having routine heater maintenance and running it efficiently, it doesn’t mean it will last forever.

A typical heater lasts approximately 15 years. If you do not know the age of your unit, check the manual or look at the serial number and ask the manufacturer.

Energy

Blasting your heater and seeing your bills rise is normal, but running it as you have and seeing sudden energy bill spikes may be questionable.

The furnace in your home is one of the biggest energy consumers, but when it is working incorrectly or it is damaged, it can actually work harder and use more energy, therefore it will cost you more money on your monthly bill.

Repairs

How often does your system need repairs? In the life of every heater or furnace there comes a time where repairs just aren't enough to keep it running.

If you’re having to call for frequent repairs, it may save you money in the long run to replace your heater.

Sounds, Smells, Sights

Your senses could be an indicator too. If you see something, smell something or hear something that looks off, it could be a warning from your heater.

You shouldn't hear screeching or squealing when it is running, you shouldn't smell something burning and if your system has cracks or corrosion, it could be time for a replacement.
